Berber Carpet is a style of carpet that consists of multiple small loops that are uncut and woven together instead. The origin of Berber carpet has been tracked back to the Paleolithic era (also known as the Stone Age) and is actually named after the “Berber Tribe” of North Africa. The tribe crafted  hand-woven rugs and clothing with cloth and natural fabrics.  Their rugs featured a distinctive knot texture that is still used today and  gives the now industrialized carpet the appearance of a hand-crafted carpet. Today, Berber carpet is one of the most popular flooring choices in homes and offices due to:

1. Low Cost
It is generally less expensive than traditional pile carpet styles and is often seen as a great value. This means you can add a beautiful, aesthetic look to your home without having to put a significant dent in the bank account.  However, it is important to note that the price range can still vary when looking at the different types of materials the berber carpet is constructed with. For example, wool is going to cost more than a nylon or olefin fiber.

2. Materials
All Berber carpets are made using a rugged looped pile that runs in parallel lines. The loops range in size from tight to loose. The biggest difference in the carpets is the fibers used to make it. The majority of Berber carpeting is made of one of three different fibers, or a blend. The fibers used determine the price, durability and stain resistance of the carpet. In short, Olefin is the most common fabric found in Berber carpeting. Wool and nylon are harder to find and more expensive. Blends of nylon and olefin are also common.

3. Durability
Berber carpet is incredibly durable. The main reason for this is because looped fiber tends to be much stronger than cut fiber.

4. Low Maintenance
As with any carpets it is recommended that you use a low-moisture or dry cleaning process every 6-12 months to keep it clean, and to ensure furniture and foot traffic do not cause permanent indentations.
Modern Berber carpets are now being used for more than just basements, schools, and office spaces. With great color offerings matched with durability and affordability, it really makes them ideal for use in any area of the home.
