Nothing quite gets you inspired like an afternoon of binge watching home improvement shows on TV. Completing a DIY project at home gives you instant bragging rights and who doesn’t love that? Unfortunately, the reality is that home improvement shows can also make some projects seem easier to accomplish than they really are. DIY projects are supposed to save you money but when it comes to flooring, a professional contractor is well worth the money. Remember, a flooring installation is a substantial investment and because of that, your property value is increased…if it is done properly.
So, before trying to do a project yourself, ask yourself these 3 questions to figure out if you might be better off calling a flooring contractor.
How complicated is the project?
Now, this is where many homeowners get themselves into trouble. A project that might seem simple and straightforward on the surface can easily turn out to be more complicated than it initially seemed. When you rip up an old floor you can uncover many issues that you weren’t prepared for or equipped to handle.
Do you have the time?
If you work full-time, you are only really able to work on the flooring project on the weekend or during the evenings after work. If the project you’re thinking of starting is pretty large scale, such as replacing the flooring throughout your entire house, a professional would be able to get the job finished much sooner than you would be able to if you only worked on it in your spare time.
Do you have the tools & supplies on hand?
The reality is – yes; you can save money by just purchasing the flooring materials at your preferred retailer (…cough, cough, Avalon Flooring!) and passing on the installation services offered to you. But, when you get home you will have to spend time researching the right tools and supplies needed for the job (ie. Cutters, Saws, Miters, Kickers, Seam Cutters, Tackers, Spacers….etc.) It all adds up very quickly, increasing the cost of the project and now you have to invest time making sure that you can use the tools correctly and safely. A professional has all the tools and supplies needed to install your flooring and you can avoid the additional expense of purchasing them and then storing them when not in use.
So regardless of which way you decide to go with your next flooring installation – we can’t express this enough — proper installation is critical to creating the look you want and making sure it stays that way for years to come. And we believe, nothing says peace of mind like freeing yourself from the stress of completing the project on your own and by hiring a professional.
