Chevron vs. Herringbone Tile Pattern

Chevron and Herringbone patterns are the “IT” patterns of the moment. 2022 tile trends consist of many different trends, but none are as popular as these geometric patterns. Even carpet and hardwood trends are showing the emergence of these patterns bursting up everywhere.

These tile patterns are confused with one another so often that even designers can be confused, but they are dramatically different in their layout. Check out the rest of our blog as we break down the differences between these two popular patterns and share our favorite design ideas.

Herringbone Tile Pattern

Herringbone tile patterns are created by laying tile at a 90-degree angle in a staggered zig-zag pattern. Herringbone tile layout is created by using equal size rectangular pieces – this layout can not be recreated using square tile. Herringbone tile layouts are usually sold as an installed product making it a popular DIY tile although we always suggest hiring a professional for best results.

Tile sizes will subtly change the overall look of the tile layout. Standard brick and subway tile patterns are more condensed to create more dense staggered geometric patterns with the tile edges meeting at the center.

Longer, elongated tile that has more of a plank format creates a more directional linear design. We see this style as popular with wood floors laid in the herringbone pattern.

Chevron Tile Pattern

The Chevron pattern is similar to herringbone but at a 45-degree angle instead of a 90. This pattern gives the stunning illusion of a fish scale and is used to draw the eye up. Chevron tile is created by a diagonal cut at the edge of a rectangle to allow for a continuous zig-zag pattern.  Homeowners can lay this tile pattern either parallel or perpendicular to their wall or floor.

DIYers beware, the chevron pattern is often sold as an integrated pattern that requires a professional touch. This is one tile layout pattern that requires symmetry and precision to get the desired look.

This tile pattern is more often used as backslashes, accent walls, and niches.
