With Tile, Comes Grout!
While choosing a tile for your renovation project is important and an exciting part to the process, don't forget about the grout! Grout tends to be forgotten about because well, let's be honest- it's not a show stopper when compared to tile. However, it plays a vital role in the tile world and is necessary for the installation of any tiled surface.
The Function of Grout
The main function of grout is to keep the tiles in place and prevent any shifting overtime. The grout bonds to the tile when installed on the back and sides of tile, ultimately strengthening the bond between grout and tile. Grout also protects from water absorption which is key when installed around sinks, showers, bathtubs and laundry rooms.
When having tile installed, be prepared to not be able to use that area or surface for up to 72 hours. On average grout takes up to 72 hours to dry. The exact drying time varies between the brand and the humidity levels in the air. Being prepared to not use that area for up to three days is ideal for the best result of binding between grout and tile.
What is Grout?
Grout is a very porous product that is used to fill gaps, voids, seal joints and reinforce existing products. Grout easily absorbs dirt, dust and grease and is the perfect product for bacteria to harbor on.
To protect your grout from these issues occurring there are a few things you can do. After your grout is installed, you should seal the grout to prevent any issues in the future and protect from bacteria, dirt and grease settling. Your installer will recommend the best sealers to use.
Cleaning your Grout
While cleaning your grout in your shower or on your tile floors may seem like an easy task, you must use the correct cleaning products so you don't damage your tile or grout. At Avalon, we carry Miracle Heavy Duty Cleaner and OceanCare Products that are available for our clients to purchase.
You will start by first applying hot water to your grout to remove any dirt or grease from the surface. You will then spray your approved cleaning solution on the grout and let sit for 5 minutes or more. Once the cleaning solution has sat, take a clean brush, we recommend a toothbrush, and scrub the grout until clean. After scrubbing the grout, rinse with hot water and watch it sparkle! This is the best way to keep your grout and tile looking good as new!

How to choose the right Grout Color
Picking the right color grout to pair well with your tile selection can sometimes be an unknown and daunting challenge. That's why our Sales Specialists are there to assist our clients through the process.
To make this process as simple as possible, compare your sample tile you have selected to multiple grout colors. Having the tile sample and grout side by side will pull the undertones from the grout and allow you to better identify which grout goes best.
Perfect Pebble 12x12 Natural Stone Tile
When installing tile in high traffic areas such as commercial spaces, the entryway of your home, kitchen or laundry room, choosing a dark grout is best. Darker grout hides dirt, debris and dust.
Glam 12x12 Matte Porcelain Tile
If you are adding tile as a backsplash, we recommend a white, light gray or beige grout to give your space a clean look. If you are adding a light grout color to your shower or high traffic areas, be sure to seal it so it will be protected.
