What is Mediterranean-Style Interior Design?
We can't deny it…Mediterranean interior design is one of our favorite interior styles. There is something about the indoor-outdoor living created by this design that is so appealing. Mediterranean style originated from countries that border the Mediterranean seas, hence the name. This European southern coast style is famous for its light and warm tones and late summer feel. This style will always remind us of the end-of-summer aesthetic; natural, effortless but so joyful.
Indoor/Outdoor Living
When it comes to the Mediterranean interior there is an emphasis on indoor/outdoor living. This is a design style rooted in coastal living and it's not afraid to play it up. All of us obviously don't live in a coastal area but there are a few clever tips and tricks you can do to extend your living space outdoors! Consider adding an indoor/outdoor area rug to accessorize your patio and make it feel homier.
Adding tile to your patio will also have a similar effect of extending your living space.
On the other hand, we are also big fans of bringing the outside in when it comes to Mediterranean design. Consider a stone look accent wall or backsplash for a more rustic Mediterranean interior design.
Don't be afraid to have a little fun with an accent wall design, especially in your kitchen! A natural stone with a simple design can add a big punch to your overall Mediterranean kitchen design.
Distinctive Color Palette
We write about many different design styles and their color palette but none is more distinct & cohesive than Mediterranean design. Opt for shades of white or cream with other natural elements for the base of your design. Mediterranean color palettes are inspired by the sun so you often see blues and turquoise accessories.
Some homeowners prefer a more bright Mediterranean color palette which they replicate by adding reds and deep yellow colors to their space.
Remember when it comes to Mediterranean design that the foundation is natural and the accessories are where the colors come in!
Natural Materials
Incorporate natural materials in your design in order to get an authentic Mediterranean look. Designing your home with natural look material is a must but so is incorporating natural look accessories to our home. Choosing furniture made out of wicker, rope, linen, cotton, and rattan is our favorite go-to when it comes to furniture.
We especially love a flat weave rug on the floor to add some extra texture. Multiple textures create more warmth to your Mediterranean design.
Opt for a more simple window treatment for a more modern Mediterranean look.
Mediterranean Flooring
When it comes to flooring for a Mediterranean home restraint is necessary. We suggest choosing the same floor for the entire house to give a cohesive look. Natural wood - look & whitewashed flooring is popular in Mediterranean design.
