A Guide On How To Measure
Tips to Help You Estimate Your Space
Before visiting a showroom or browsing online for new flooring, it’s best to have an idea of how much space you plan on covering. This will help you sift through the options to find a solution that meets your style and your budget. While each flooring category requires its own specific technique for measurement, the guide below can help you estimate the size of your space.
HOW TO MEASURE
FOR FLOORING
STEP ONE
Download and print our Room Sketch Sheet.
STEP TWO
Measure the length and width of each room at its longest or widest point. You should round up to the nearest half foot.
For example: If your room is 10’ 4” wide, you should round up to 10’ 6” wide. This is easiest for when you are calculating final measurements and convert that to a decimal. Your new measurement is 10.5 ft
STEP THREE
Multiply your length and width measurements to determine the total number of square feet in your room.
For example: 10’ wide and 15’ long: 10.5 x 15 = 150 square ft
STEP FOUR
Add together the sums of each room you are planning to cover with new flooring.
For example: Bedroom 1 = 200 square ft, Bedroom 2 = 150 square ft. Total Square Feet needed = 350 square ft
Finding the square footage of an odd-shaped room does require a few more math steps. You should measure each “rectangle” separately the best you can and then add together the sums for your estimated square footage.
If you’re having Avalon Flooring install your product, one of our professional Estimators will visit your home to do final measurements free of charge to make sure you are covered. They will determine any other conditions that may impact the installation process. They will also be sure to include enough overage on the material to allow for the final project as well as for future repairs if you need it. By ordering “extra” material you will be sure to have product that matches and is from the same production run.
HOW TO MEASURE
FOR WINDOW
TREATMENTS
When you visit one of our showrooms, our team will be able to provide you pricing for standard size windows if you don’t have approximate measurements with you, but it is important to note that each window is unique and every window will be measured individually for its intended window treatment prior to final ordering.
Before you begin, you will need to decide if you would like your window treatment to be mounted on the inside of the window frame or on the outside of the window frame, because you will have to measure accordingly.
STEP ONE
Download and print our Room Sketch Sheet.
STEP TWO
Draw or make a list of the windows for your project to record your measurements.
STEP THREE: INSIDE
MOUNTED WINDOW
TREATMENT
Measure both the width and height inside the window frame from top of window to sill using a steel tape measure.
STEP THREE: OUTSIDE
MOUNTED WINDOW
TREATMENT
Measure the height from the top of the window frame to the sill and the width from the edges of the frame using a steel tape measure.
Hunter Douglas window treatments are custom fabricated for your windows only and accuracy is key. If Avalon Flooring is installing your window treatments, our professional estimators will measure each of your windows, free of charge, to make sure that your final product has a proper fit.
