As we referenced in our 2022 article about minimalist design trends, minimalist styles let you do a lot with a little. Focusing on simplicity and function above all else, minimalist house interiors are fun to plan and design while affording you a surprising amount of creative freedom. From Scandinavian minimalist interior design plans to Japanese interior design (the minimalist kind, anyway), you can draw inspiration from cultures around the world.
Modern minimalist interior design emphasizes carefully chosen accents and reducing a design to the bare minimum. You’ll eliminate clutter - as well as anything that doesn’t serve a specific purpose - as you pare down your surroundings to what you absolutely need.
Bedroom Minimalist Interior Design
Designing a minimalist bedroom is challenging. Many of the go-to design suggestions are tough to implement in a bedroom. For example, the tried-and-true strategy of eliminating window coverings to reduce visual clutter doesn’t work well in a room where you need to control the amount of natural light.
The image above points out just a few of the many options that remain, though. You could try:
- Using a muted color scheme with a few pops of color (like a throw)
- Relying on wall-mounted lighting to keep your floor plan clear of free-standing lamps
- Throwing in some greenery to add color and life to counter the sterility of minimalistic interior design
Whatever you do, keep your design muscles limber. Minimalist design isn’t the creative straitjacket that some people believe it is.
Living Room Minimalist Interior Design
Living rooms are where minimalist design really shines. You get to break out your bag of minimalist tricks, from multipurpose furniture to open floor plans. Remember to keep your space free of unnecessary clutter. Maintain plenty of open space for yourself and your guests to move around. And use abundant lighting - both natural and artificial - to brighten up those dark corners.
The image above showcases one of our favorite techniques in minimalist design: intelligent flooring selection. Hard flooring combined with an accent rug (like our Afuera Yacht Club rug) really tie this room together without getting in the way of the minimalist aesthetic.
Kitchen Minimalist Interior Design
Considering the amount of time most of us spend in this room, the kitchen is a shoe-in for the room most likely to benefit from the uber-functional and uncluttered motifs of minimalist design. We find its best to think of the entire room as one big toolbox where the aim is to maximize easy access to every pot, pan, chef’s knife, and dish.

We really like the small (but impactful) design choices made in this kitchen. Notice how the barstools tuck away underneath the island for easy storage when they’re not in use. This keeps walkways clear and makes for better flow. Also, check out how the cabinets don’t have any grips or handles cluttering your eye-line. The flat surfaces make for a clean and contemporary look.
Bathroom Minimalist Interior Design
While often hidden from view, the right design choices in your bathrooms can take your home to the next level of functionality. Minimalist bathrooms are much easier to clean and maintain, and your guests will feel more comfortable.
The sheer number of design choices you’ll face in this room is reduced, but that doesn’t make them any less important. We suggest focusing heavily on color and texture. Bright whites and off-whites are a can’t-miss look, and porcelain floors - like our Alluvium Porcelain Tiles - bring everything together with an elegant and sophisticated flourish.
Minimalist Modern Cabin Interior
For our final suggestions, we thought we’d throw you a bit of a curveball. Rather than focus on yet another room in the house, we’ll offer a couple ideas you can use at the cottage this spring.
For obvious reasons, dark blacks and bright whites don’t work that well in a cabin. Instead, stick with the deep, rich tones that work so well in nature. Keep your windows free of window treatments, like drapes and curtains. You’re going to want to maximize natural light (especially early in the mornings), so ditch those blinds and update your window frames instead.

Lastly, use furniture that doubles as storage space, like storage ottomans and beds with drawers underneath the mattress. Cabins tend to fill with all the toys and gadgets you need at the lake and you’ll need a place to put it all if you want to maintain a clean and clutter-free aesthetic.
